Euro Handball Poland 2014

GROUP I2: Croatia with win

Dispite many problems in second half Croatian national team won their game against Czech Republic 35:30. They played very well first half but then Czechs improved their handball and managed to reduce distance.

Game started with lead of Croatia – firstly goal scored Marko Sević, who used great pass from Robert Tokić and then after counterattack scored Marko Jurakić. Czech Republic lost the ball and Croats had chance to 3:0 but on their way was goalkeeper Bohumil Psenica. After second mistake made by their opponents they were effective and soon they had three goals. Well playing was defense and goalkeeper Matija Spikic in Croatian team and soon they enlarge distance to 4:0. First goal Czechs managed to score in 7th minute when after position attack throw Stanislav Kasparek. That didn’t break very concentrated players from Balkans who were enlarging distance which in 9th minute was seven goals and coach of Czech Republic asked for time-out.

That didn’t changed much. Croatia was playing good both in defense and offence and soon lead 2:10. However minutes later they had some problems with scoring and Czechs reduced their advantage to 5:10. Even if the distance was quite big players from Balkans couldn’t be too relaxed and that was the thing that Hrvoje Horvat seemed to be anxious about. In almost five minutes to end of the first half he asked for time-out to bring his players back. In last minutes Czechs tried to play with very high defense which made their opponents little problems. However advantage was unquestionable and Croats were much better and first part ended 13:20.

Second half started with goal of Filip Doricak. Czech Republic seemed to improve their play, especially they were more efficient in offence. It looked like they finally found the way to break Croats. However Balkan players weren’t thinking about giving up and even if their defense was not so good as in first half they still were playing quite well in attack. Sometimes good change in Czechs goal (on the playground we noticed Filip Herjat) enable them finding way to score. The problems noticed coach Horvat and quickly asked for his second time-out. His players still were making mistakes in offence and with fast breaks. That came to result 21:23 in 41th minute.

Croatian players were mistaken even from 7 meters when Jan Hrdlicka saved throw of Matija Babić. Problems of Croatian seemed to rise as seconds later they lost another goal when 7 meter used Frantisek Dedecek and suspension got Ante Babić. Before draw Croatian team saved only Matija Sipkić and after that his team seemed to have new powers. Soon they had again three goals more and now Czech’s coach, Libor Hrabal asked for break. His players didn’t manage to win that game and Croatia kept advantage till the end, winning 30:35.

Libor Hrabal, Czech Republic, coach: Like yesterday we started very bad. We made many mistakes, technical fouls and Croatia was running to fast breaks. In second half we had chance to win but Croatian goalkeeper was on his place, he saved some goals for Croatia in the end it was done for us.

Filip Doricak, Czech Republic, player: For us it was the best game on that tournament. It was pretty hard to motivate as we lost all matches before. We played well but our defense was not working in some moments and that is why we lost.

Hrvoje Horvat, Croatia, coach: We started the game very good, we were fighting in defense and got some easy goals before the half time. My players were satisfied with a high advantage they got after the first half and then weren’t playing good. I have to say I am disappointed because then they didn’t fight. I am happy about victory and first half but about second one I am very disappointed.

Matija Spikić, Croatia, player: In first half we started well and at one moment we made eight goals difference. Then we didn’t know what happened, they come very closed but we won and we are very happy about it.
